Writing Ingress Protection and Cleanroom Requirements into a Specification

Published: Publisher: Zhilianhai Robotics News

Cover image is an AI-generated illustration of a robotics application, not a photograph of the equipment described.

Environmental conditions are the part of a specification most often deferred and most often exposed on site. Dust, moisture, oil mist, temperature and cleanliness requirements need to be written as items that can be checked.

Describe the real environment first

Avoid subjective wording such as "harsh environment". State instead whether there is cutting fluid spray, metal dust, wash-down water, oil mist or corrosive gas, and how the area is cleaned. This information determines the protection concept and the cable routing that is required, and it also affects how often the cell has to be cleaned or inspected.

Match protection to the cleaning method

Ingress protection describes resistance to dust and water, and different ratings correspond to different service conditions. A station that is washed down and one that is only wiped have different requirements. The end effector, cable connectors and the control cabinet are often the weakest points and should be reviewed at the same time.

Cleanroom requirements touch the whole machine

Cleanroom suitability is not only about the enclosure. Lubrication method, air exhaust routing, surface geometry that collects particles, and cable materials that shed are all relevant. If a cleanliness class applies, raise it during the enquiry and ask the supplier to state how the configuration meets it and on what basis.

Put the requirements into the offer and acceptance

Environmental conditions belong in the technical agreement as part of configuration and acceptance, not in a verbal note. Recording them early avoids rework once the equipment is on site.

This article suggests how to structure requirements and recommends no specific rating. The actual configuration follows from site assessment and the manufacturer's technical data.
