Product Launch or Roadmap? Telling the Two Apart

A great deal of frustration in robot procurement comes from reading a roadmap item as an available product. The words in the press release are often careful; the summary is not.

Three states worth separating

Announced means the company has described the product. Orderable means a configuration, price basis and delivery route exist. Shipping means units have been delivered to customers outside the developer's own organisation. Each state carries different risk for a buyer.

Questions that reveal the state

Is there a published specification sheet with defined test conditions? Is there a lead time for a defined configuration? Are there reference installations that can be described in general terms? Negative answers do not mean the product is bad; they mean the state is earlier than the headline suggested.

Why roadmaps slip

Robot products depend on components with their own lead times, on tooling, on software readiness and on safety documentation. Any of those can move a date. Treating a launch date as a contract date, without an agreement that says so, is the most common source of disappointment.

Keep a record of first claims

Saving the original announcement makes it possible later to see how a product's stated capability evolved. That record is also what protects a buyer from a supplier's convenient reinterpretation.

This article explains how to distinguish product states. It evaluates no specific product.
