Distinguishing a Research Paper from a Product Claim

Robotics research is frequently reported as if it were product news. The underlying work may be excellent and still be a poor guide to what a machine will do in a factory, because the two make different kinds of claims.

Conditions and scope

A paper reports results under stated conditions, often with a fixed set of objects, a controlled environment and a defined task. Those conditions are the substance of the result. When they are dropped in the retelling, the claim appears broader than the evidence.

Baselines and metrics

Look at what the method was compared against and by which metric. An improvement over an older method may still be far from the reliability a production process requires, and a metric optimised in a laboratory may not be the one that matters on a line.

Time between paper and product

Published work is often several years ahead of anything orderable, and many results are never productised. Treating a paper as a roadmap item is a reasonable source of interest and a poor basis for a procurement plan.

How to read both together

Use papers to understand what is becoming possible and to ask better questions. Use specifications, trials on your own parts and acceptance records to decide what to buy.
