Company Profile: Square Robot, Inc.
A profile of Square Robot's on-stream storage tank inspection business, covering the SR-3 platform, the Marathon collaboration, inspection deliverables, and site-specific procurement boundaries.
Company and inspection business
Square Robot, Inc. is a US company focused on robotic inspection inside aboveground storage tanks. Its business combines a submersible robot fleet with inspection services and reporting. Buyers should evaluate the complete inspection engagement, including access, data collection and interpretation, rather than assume they are simply purchasing an autonomous vehicle.
The current SR-3 platform
The SR-3 product page describes a submersible robot designed to inspect tanks while they remain in service. It uses phased-array ultrasonic sensing for thickness measurement and corrosion mapping. The page also describes a fiber-optic communication tether. Autonomous navigation should therefore not be confused with a completely untethered deployment or unattended inspection service.
What an inspection can include
The company's inspection services page lists tank-bottom and shell inspection, reporting, settlement-related measurements and tank calibration. These are scope options to define in a proposal. The same page explicitly offers tank-candidacy evaluation and notes that not every configuration is suitable. Specify the required measurements and reporting outputs before selecting the deployment method.
A dated industrial relationship
On December 15, 2025, Square Robot announced funding and collaboration with Marathon Petroleum. The release said Marathon would continue deploying the existing fleet for inspections while contributing to development of a next-generation platform. This distinguishes an established inspection relationship from future product development. The announcement does not mean the next-generation system was already available to all customers.
Tank access and suitability
The SR-3 page describes roof and side-shell entry options, with the choice dependent on tank configuration and contents. A buyer should provide drawings, opening dimensions, internal obstructions, product information and operating conditions. Request a written suitability assessment that identifies any required preparation and the limits of expected inspection coverage.
Include launch and recovery arrangements in the project review. Agree who supplies lifting equipment, permits, isolation decisions and emergency support. Keeping a tank in service is a project objective subject to suitability, rather than an unconditional promise for every asset.
Reporting and acceptance criteria
A useful acceptance plan defines the inspected area, measurement quality checks, inaccessible zones and reporting deadline. Require a clear separation between collected measurements, statistical estimates and engineering conclusions. Ask how repeat inspections can be aligned with previous datasets, and whether the owner receives raw readings, position references, images and an exportable final report.
For any claim involving a particular inspection standard or hazardous environment, request the current supporting documents and their exact scope. The robot model, inspection method and local authority's requirements must all match the proposed job.
Regional service and commercial contact
The official contact page lists US engineering and operations locations and service regions spanning North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Latin America. A regional listing is an invitation to discuss coverage, not a guaranteed mobilization date. Provide the tank location and target inspection window, then confirm the local execution team and contracting entity.
Questions for a tank inspection tender
Is this tank suitable for SR-3, and what preparation is necessary?
Which measurements and inaccessible areas will the report identify?
Who supplies site equipment and manages deployment and recovery?
What data rights, interpretation services and follow-up support are included?
