Shark Robotics: Colossus and Rhyno Protect for Civil Fire and Rescue
French ground robotics manufacturer offering remotely operated fire and rescue platforms. Compare Colossus and Rhyno Protect configurations, operator controls and evidence for deployment requirements.
Company and engineering base
Shark Robotics was founded in 2016 in La Rochelle, France. The company describes in-house work spanning robot hardware, software and batteries. Its fire and rescue portfolio includes Colossus and Rhyno Protect. These are separate platforms within the same supplier, with different equipment and transport requirements for civil emergency services.
Colossus for heavier support tasks
Colossus is a tracked, remotely controlled firefighting robot. Available modules include a water cannon, thermal and visual cameras, equipment basket and stretcher support. Its current technical table lists a maximum payload of 500 kg and 12 hours of operation. Actual endurance requires confirmation for the selected equipment and duty cycle.
Rhyno Protect configuration
Rhyno Protect is the manufacturer's more compact electric firefighting platform. Its technical table specifies a maximum payload of 200 kg and five hours of operation. Water or foam delivery, observation, equipment carriage and casualty support depend on fitted modules. Compare the complete delivered configuration, including accessories, with the base platform specification.
Operator interface and mission data
The product pages describe Shark Station remote control with camera feedback, telemetry, assisted driving and image recording. They identify a line-of-sight communication range with relay conditions, rather than guaranteed coverage inside every building. Buyers should ask how video, control and recorded data behave when connectivity becomes weak or unavailable.
Autonomous development versus catalog operation
A September 2024 announcement describes a France 2030 project with ONERA to develop autonomous firefighting robotics. That development programme is distinct from the remote-control descriptions of Colossus and Rhyno Protect. References to operating hours on the catalog pages concern endurance; they do not establish that an installed robot can assess and manage incidents without an operator.
Civil response evidence and specification limits
Shark reports Colossus participation in the Notre-Dame fire response in April 2019. It also announced a partnership with France's national firefighting federation in September 2022. These references establish historical activity. Some current product-page figures differ between tables and promotional sections, so request a dated specification for the quoted model rather than combining values.
Deployment and maintenance questions
Before purchase, define the intended facilities, transport arrangement, communications assessment and trained operator responsibilities. Ask for documented acceptance criteria, maintenance intervals, battery replacement terms, spare-part lead times and software support. Include cleaning after use, storage, inspection and recovery provisions in the service discussion. Agree which options are included and how the supplier will demonstrate the contracted configuration under the buyer's approved assessment conditions.
