Industrial vs Collaborative Robots: A Decision Framework
Payload, speed, safety concept and total cost decide the answer.
Compare on four axes
| Axis | Industrial | Collaborative |
|---|---|---|
| Payload and speed | Higher, built for cycle time | Lower, built for flexibility |
| Safety concept | Guarding, interlocks | Power and force limiting plus risk assessment |
| Programming | Specialist | Often teach-by-hand or block-based |
| Total cost | Higher integration, lower unit risk | Lower integration, higher unit cost |
Practical rule
If the task is fixed and the volume is high, industrial arms usually win on cost per part. If variants change often or the cell must be re-used, collaborative arms win on reconfiguration time.
Do not skip the risk assessment
Collaborative does not mean risk-free: grippers, sharp edges and speed still require assessment.
