Collaborative Robot Market Matures as Safety Rules Clarify
Cobots move from novelty to a standard option now that assessment practice is settled.
Where cobots fit
Cobots are most useful where the payload is small, the volume is moderate and human presence is unavoidable: machine tending, inspection, assembly assistance and testing. They are a poor fit for high-speed, high-payload tasks where a caged industrial robot is cheaper per cycle.
| Application | Why a cobot fits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Machine tending | Small parts, frequent changeover | Guard the machine, not only the robot |
| Inspection | Human and robot share the station | Camera and lighting design |
| Assembly assistance | Variable sequence | Cycle time rarely beats a human |
| Testing and lab work | Repetitive, low force | Sample presentation stability |
The safety work does not disappear
A cobot removes fencing only if the risk assessment says so. Force, speed and separation distances must be evaluated for every task, including the tool and the workpiece. Installations that skip that step end up slower than necessary, or non-compliant.
