Starship Technologies was founded in 2014 by Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis. Its official About page identifies a business headquarters in San Francisco, engineering in Estonia and research and development in Helsinki. The company lists operations in the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Sweden, Czechia, Finland, Estonia and Switzerland.
Its delivery services address groceries, prepared food and industrial supplies. Historical examples include a commercial launch in Milton Keynes in 2018 and US university-campus delivery beginning at George Mason University in 2019. These are company-reported milestones, not a promise of service at every address.
Sidewalk delivery platform
The e-model is a six-wheeled delivery robot. Starship describes cameras, radar and ultrasonic sensing for navigation, an insulated compartment holding up to three shopping bags, and customer unlocking by phone. Its published specifications describe up to 18 hours on a charge and wireless overnight charging.
The company describes sidewalk travel at pedestrian speed, local autonomous safety functions and remote human assistance when needed. Its FAQ gives a typical store delivery area of about two miles, subject to local coverage. Payload, range and operating time must be confirmed for the route and service contract; they are not independent test results.
Operating model
Evaluate Starship as a delivery-service and integration discussion, not simply a robot purchase. Ask which merchants, customer applications, loading workflows, charging facilities and remote-operations services are included. Do not assume a deployment in another country establishes local permission or commercial availability.
Questions before a pilot
Who obtains route permissions and coordinates with site owners or local authorities?
Can the route accommodate crossings, curb geometry, winter conditions and accessible pedestrian passage?
Who handles loading, failed delivery, customer support, damage and emergency recovery?
What service area, operating hours, food-handling responsibilities, insurance and response times are contractual?
Which delivery-volume, customer-experience and incident metrics determine pilot acceptance?
