Earthing and Noise Immunity Basics
Weak earthing creates problems that more equipment will not fix.
Three principles
| Principle | Practice |
|---|---|
| Single-point earthing | Bring control and power earths to a common point |
| Resistance | Meet the site and equipment requirement and measure it periodically |
| Shielding | Terminate signal shields according to the specification |
Site advice
- Keep drives close to their motors to shorten power cables.
- Route signal and power cables in separate trays or with spacing.
- Re-check the earthing network every time equipment is added, to avoid loops.
Noise problems need on-site measurement. This article describes general practice rather than a diagnosis.
