Payload vs Mass: Getting the Load Rating Right
Tooling weight is the most commonly forgotten number in robot projects.
The two terms
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Rated payload | The maximum mass the manufacturer allows |
| Effective payload | What remains for the part once the tooling is deducted |
Verification steps
- Include the gripper, flange, cabling and hoses in the tooling mass.
- Remember that a centre of mass further from the flange reduces the allowable load.
- Check the moment of inertia limit, especially when handling long parts at speed.
Load limits come from the manufacturer load curves. Exceeding them reduces gearbox life.
