Reducing False Alarms
Alarms that people ignore are as dangerous as none at all.
Common causes
| Cause | Typical fix |
|---|---|
| Marginal settings | Recalibrate or adjust to the real process |
| Sensor contamination | Clean and add a maintenance task |
| Loose connectors | Re-terminate and secure cables |
| Aggressive thresholds | Tune based on measured variation |
| Process drift | Correct the process, not the alarm |
How to work on it
- Log every alarm, including those cleared without action.
- Group by cause and fix the top three first.
- Track the alarm rate as a maintenance metric.
Never disable a safety-related alarm. Fix the cause or change the design through proper review.
