OnRobot: Grippers, Vision and D:PLOY Application Tools
OnRobot supplies end-of-arm tooling and application software for manufacturing. Review finger and vacuum grippers, Eyes vision, D:PLOY integration scope and customer examples before specifying a workcell.
OnRobot and application tooling
OnRobot A/S is based in Odense, Denmark, and supplies end-of-arm tools and software for robotic applications. Its product catalogue covers finger, vacuum and magnetic grippers, force sensing, vision, tool changers and application equipment. Typical uses include machine tending, material handling, assembly and palletizing.
A component purchase and a complete partner workcell have different delivery boundaries. Specify whether the project needs a tool for an existing arm, an application package or a fully integrated cell. Robot mechanics, fixtures, operating procedures and commissioning remain part of the overall project. Research reviewed: 10 September 2026.
Finger grippers and the actual workpiece
The current range includes RG2 and RG6 two-finger tools, the 2FG7 parallel gripper and the 3FG15 and 3FG25 three-finger families. The 2FG7 page describes electric gripping for handling, assembly and machine tending. Its version 2.0 datasheet distinguishes a 7 kg force-fit payload from an 11 kg form-fit payload and lists a 38 mm total stroke.
These figures do not mean every 11 kg workpiece can be held by friction. Review the gripping mode, contact surfaces, fingers, orientation and motion with the supplier. The same datasheet attaches its cleanroom and ESD statements to a specified bellow configuration. Obtain the documents for the exact supplied version rather than extending a model-level rating to the whole workcell.
Vacuum tools and utility requirements
OnRobot offers multiple vacuum-gripping approaches. The VGP30 page describes a pneumatic gripper using an external air supply, with two independently controlled vacuum channels for palletizing and material handling. It also describes interchangeable suction-cup arrangements. Do not assume every OnRobot gripper is electric or has identical utility requirements.
Provide actual cartons or parts, including porous surfaces, seams, labels and possible deformation. Confirm the required air quality, supply capacity, suction cups, grip monitoring and behavior during an interruption. Test the heaviest and least rigid products at the intended motion settings. Tool payload is only one input to the robot and cell design.
Eyes vision and supported robot integration
OnRobot Eyes is described as a 2.5D vision system that adds height information for tasks such as sorting, picking and handling stacked objects. It can be mounted on the robot or externally and supports object detection using a calibrated view of the work area.
Choose mounting and lighting around the real parts, backgrounds and required placement accuracy. Ask for trials involving reflections, changing heights and partially obscured parts. A successful detection example does not establish general bin-picking capability for every material or a safety-monitoring function.
The D:PLOY learning area organizes resources by application, robot brand and tool. Use the exact controller and software version when checking support; a brand logo alone does not confirm that an existing installation supports every tool or application.
D:PLOY and the workcell definition
D:PLOY Palletizing describes a workflow for discovering hardware, defining workspace boundaries and obstacles, entering application information and generating program logic and paths. Related D:PLOY applications cover transferring, CNC machine tending and packaging.
Configuration depends on an accurate cell description and a supported equipment combination. Document the conveyor and machine signals, tool selection, pallet positions, permitted working area and recovery process. Ask which options, licenses and integration services are included. The supplier's setup-time examples should not be treated as a fixed commissioning schedule for a different factory.
Product history and customer examples
OnRobot's 2FG7 getting-started resource dated 14 June 2021 documents the product package and links to mechanical and electrical setup topics. It is a dated product resource, not evidence that every current variant or specification was available in 2021.
The Automation Within Reach case study describes the integrator's selection of 3FG25 tooling for lathe-tending cells, including a configuration with two grippers. A separate Schrobbelèr case study describes a MoveComponents palletizer supplied through Just Automate and powered by D:PLOY.
Those case pages were available at the review date but show no publication date in their article text. They are supplier-published accounts, not independent performance tests. Their reported installation experience and results apply to the described projects; the named integrators are not presented here as representatives for every destination.
Questions for a practical application trial
Which parts, cartons and product variations must the cell handle?
Which grip mode, fingers or cups are required, and how are difficult samples tested?
What is the combined tooling and workpiece load on the selected arm?
Which controller, software and application versions are supported together?
Which utilities, fixtures, machine interfaces and cell equipment are included?
How are a lost grip, failed detection, interrupted cycle and product change handled?
Who performs commissioning and confirms the complete cell's operating limits?
What local maintenance, spare parts, training and update support is included?
Agree acceptance measures for successful transfers, part damage, operator intervention, changeover time and sustained output. Ask for a quotation that separates tools, robot hardware, software and engineering so the scope can be compared.
